Although the Heat have ruled the NBA for the past two seasons, the Western Conference has been where all the big boys hang out. Put it this way: Only two teams in the Eastern Conference had 50 or more wins last season. In the Western Conference, five teams have 50 or more wins.
That’s a pretty big difference.
But this year, things may be slightly different.
With the moves the Nets and Pacers have made this off-season, they should be able to eclipse the 50 win mark this upcoming year. After all, they both were just one game shy in 2012-2013. Same goes for the Chicago Bulls, who will have their MVP back in uniform for hopefully the entire season. Oh, and you may as well chalk the Heat and Knicks up for 50 win seasons again because, well, they’re both stacked.
So that brings the total to five Eastern Conference teams with 50 or more wins this upcoming season. Sure, that’s just a projection, but it is certainly possible given the talent each team has and just for the record, there haven’t been that many good teams in the East in well over 10 years.
But don’t worry, because at least one member of the Miami Heat is keeping tabs on what each team has been doing:
“The East is going to be a beast this year,” Mario Chalmers said. “It’s going to be tough competition every night. Brooklyn’s making moves, Indiana just got Luis Scola, Derrick Rose coming back to the Bulls, it’s going to be a tough Eastern Conference this year. At the same time, we’ll still do what we do to try to get that third championship that we want.”
“Last season is over,” Chalmers said. “Time to get ready for the next one.”
And the first thing Miami need to do if they want to three-peat: Sign Greg Oden. After that, they just need to make sure LeBron is okay.
